The History of Peter Storm

Noel Bibby founder of the Peter Storm company in 1954Peter Storm was started in 1954 by Noel Bibby who allied his experiences in the Royal Marines during WW2, and his great love of the outdoor world, to form a company making specialised waterproof and thermal clothing for walking, sailing, golf and country wear.

Ever innovative, Peter Storm flourished by being the first company to provide 100% waterproof lightweight nylon rainwear, the first to weld together complete garments with no stitching, the first to make permanently proofed knitwear and the first with waterproof and breathable coatings with no 'pores', and at a sensible price.

These innovations have kept Peter Storm at the top. Whilst innovation was important to Peter Storm's success, Noel always made sure that the importance of the fit of each new design was never forgotten.

Keen to expand, Noel quickly developed markets abroad, with a Peter Storm company to handle the distribution. America, Japan and Holland were quickly followed by Ireland, Australia, Germany, Canada, Norway and Spain. Close association with agents in Denmark, Finland, Italy and Sweden marked the boundaries of his international achievements.

Not satisfied with just manufacturing clothing, Noel also expanded vertically to create his own proofing plant in Manchester, England. This was to provide another great interest in his life. His knowledge of the constituent chemicals that went to make his first breathable proofings and the degree of confusion in the trade, led him to design from scratch a simple yet accurate machine to measure the breathability of proofings and to relate the information in layman's terms.

Sadly, Noel died in 1989, but he left behind one of the best loved and internationally famous outdoor clothing brands in the World.
